Inlays and Onlays
Overview
Inlays and onlays are a very effective solution when a significant portion of a tooth's biting surface is damaged or decayed. Inlays and onlays can be made of gold, composite or tooth colored porcelain, depending on which teeth require repair.
Inlays
If the damage or decay is relatively small, Dr. Gates will consider whether an inlay or tooth colored filling is more appropriate. Inlays are similar to fillings because they fit into a space in the tooth. Unlike fillings, inlays are shaped and prepared in a laboratory.
Onlays
If the damage or decay is fairly extensive, Dr. Gates will evaluate whether an onlay or a crown is a better solution. Like inlays, onlays are prepared in a lab, but they replace a greater proportion of the surface area of your tooth. Onlays are sometimes called partial crowns.
Benefits of Inlays and Onlays
In many cases where teeth have decayed or have a weakened structure, inlays and onlays may be an excellent solution. Unlike fillings or crowns, inlays and onlays are uniquely capable of strengthening the actual structure of the tooth by up to 75%. For this reason, inlays and onlays can last anywhere from 10 to 30 years or more. Also, inlays and onlays can be prepared using a tooth colored porcelain material to make them virtually undetectable.
What to Expect if You Get Inlays or Onlays
Inlays and onlays are fitted and bonded in two separate appointments. Anesthetic is used to ensure your comfort during the procedure. During the first appointment, our staff will prepare the tooth for repair by removing any damaged or decayed areas. We will then take an impression of your teeth so the inlay or onlay can be molded to a shape that will be comfortable. The prepared tooth is then covered with a sealant to protect it while the inlay or onlay is being molded in the lab. At your second appointment (two weeks later), Dr. Gates will evaluate the inlay and onlay to make sure the color, shape, fit and biting surface are right. After making any minor adjustments, the inlay or onlay will be cemented into place. If you are interested in learning whether inlays or onlays are a good solution for you, schedule a consultation visit with Dr. Gates. He will perform a complete examination to determine the source of tooth damage and help you develop a repair plan that will achieve the best possible results.
