Overview

Dental implans are a popular option for permanently replacing missing teeth. People missing one or more teeth may experience difficulties chewing and speaking. In addition, when teeth are missing, the supporting bone begins to disintegrate, leading to gum disease, sunken cheeks and poor bite alignment. Dental implants are small titanium posts placed into the jawbone. Titanium is a highly versatile material that is able to fuse with your own bone over time. When artificial teeth are attached to the implants, they are extremely durable and look very natural. Root form implants, the most common type of dental implants, are designed to closely mimic the shape and size of your natural tooth root. They are commonly used when there is sufficient jawbone to support the implants.

Benefits of Implants

Dental implants are the next best thing to your real teeth. They look and feel natural, function perfectly and protect your jawbone and oral tissues from damage and disease. In many cases, dental implants are actually stronger than natural teeth. Dr. Gates can also design your replacement teeth with a brighter shade and more flattering shape than your natural teeth so you feel confident and look your best.

What to Expect if You Get Dental Implants

Implant dentistry is completed in two phases. In the first phase, an incision is made in the gum tissue and the implant is placed in the jawbone beneath. The gum tissue is then stitched closed and there is a waiting period for three to six months while the gum heals and the titanium implant bonds with the jawbone to ensure a strong foundation for the replacement teeth. The second phase consists of creating and attaching the replacement tooth or teeth. Part of the implant is uncovered to protrude from the gum tissue and provide a foundation to attach your new teeth to. You can count on Dr. Gates to take your lifestyle, facial characteristics, and preferences under consideration when designing your new teeth.
