Veneers and Bonded Porcelain
Overview
Porcelain veneers, also called dental veneers or porcelain laminates, are thin molded shells of ceramic that are cemented directly onto a damaged or discolored tooth's surface. Veneers are one of the newest and most popular methods for repairing or improving an imperfect smile. The techniques used in designing and applying porcelain veneers require technical expertise and attention to cosmetic detail. Dr. Gates is highly skilled in designing unique custom veneers to fit each patient's individual needs.
Benefits of Porcelain Veneers
When a natural appearance is of the utmost importance, porcelain veneers are unsurpassed. The porcelain used to make veneers is partially translucent, exactly like the natural enamel on your teeth, so your corrected smile will look totally natural. The smoothness of porcelain veneers helps prevent stains, so your veneers will stay beautiful for years to come. Although porcelain by itself can be brittle, it becomes very strong and durable when bonded to the sturdy enamel of your teeth. Porcelain veneers often last well over a decade before any repairs are required.
Are Veneers Right for Me?
Porcelain veneers may be able to dramatically improve your appearance and self-confidence. Dr. Gates can determine whether you are a good candidate, but you may be able to benefit from veneers if: - You would like to mask old fillings which have become discolored - Your teeth are permanently discolored due to natural causes or from trauma - Your teeth are crooked or have gaps but you would like to avoid wearing braces - Your teeth have small chips or have become worn down or misshaped (if you have missing teeth, a dental implant may be a good solution for you) - Your teeth are free of decay or active gum disease - Your teeth have not been weakened by decay or fracture (teeth that have weakened structure may benefit from crowns) - Your teeth have sufficient enamel to support the veneers
What to Expect When You Get Veneers
After your initial consultation to determine that veneers are right for you, you can expect to have three more appointments to design and apply the veneers. During the first of those appointments, Dr. Gates will trim down the enamel on the teeth that are to be fitted with veneers by about .5 millimeters (approximately the thickness of an eggshell) to accommodate the veneer. He will then take plaster molds of your teeth so the veneers can be shaped with a custom fit. It will take about a week for your veneers to be shaped in the lab. Once they are finished, you will come back for your second appointment to have the veneers bonded to your teeth. Before your veneers are bonded to your teeth, you and Dr. Gates will evaluate the shape and color of the veneers and make any final adjustments required to perfect your smile. You can also expect that Dr. Gates will ask you to return for a follow-up evaluation about a week after your veneers are bonded. This visit will address any concerns you may have, as well as allow Dr. Gates to ensure your teeth and gums are responding well to the veneers.
